Recent Acquisitions will Create HR Behemoths and Employer Uncertainty

There was big news in the online employee benefit administration arena in July – the pending acquisitions of three significant players: Workscape by ADP, Hewitt by AON and IPA by Mercer. If the acquisitions proceed as expected, three HR behemoths will be created, ADP/Workscape with approximately 45,500 employees, AON/Hewitt with nearly 29,000 employees and Mercer/IPA with more than 18,000 employees.

Positive outcomes of the mergers as stated in corporate press releases might include “leveraging company strengths,” “creating efficiencies” and “broadening product and service portfolios.” However, less positive outcomes – at least in the near future – will likely include culture clashes, distracted management and a lack of client focus. All of which are bound to create uncertainty among current and prospective clients.
