Since 1949, Mental Health America and other mental health non-profit organizations across the country have led the observance of May as Mental Health Month.

While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. Work, parenting, finances, physical health and other challenges can often cause serious strain on one’s ability to effectively function. Regardless if you have been diagnosed with a mental illness or are experiencing debilitating stressors, there are several non-profit organizations that can provide resources and help. Here is a list of some organizations that could serve as a valuable resource.

NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) – According to Peggy Huppert, Executive Director of NAMI Iowa, “NAMI is the oldest and largest grassroots organization in the US addressing education, support and advocacy for people dealing with mental health conditions and their loved ones. We have chapters in all 50 states and over 600 local affiliates. All NAMI classes, support groups and presentations are done by trained volunteers with lived experience and most are free of charge for participants.” NAMI also offers a free HelpLine at 800-950-6264 or in a crisis you can text NAMI to 741741.

Vibrant Emotional Health – For 50 years, Vibrant Emotional Health, formerly the Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC), has been at the forefront of promoting emotional well-being for all people. Vibrant Emotional Health works tirelessly to help save lives and assist people to get care anytime, anywhere and in anyway that works for them. This organization funds the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which can be accessed by calling 1-800-273-8255.

Mental Health America – Mental Health America (MHA) is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. MHA’s work is driven by its commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all; early identification and intervention for those at risk; integrated care, services, and supports for those who need it; with recovery as the goal. One of MHA’s resources is a Self-Help tool which includes an online screening test for mental health disorders, a stress test and an interactive resource guide on where to find assistance if you need help.

There are still negative stigmas associated with mental illness, but at Businessolver our culture is one that promotes seeking help when needed and not being ashamed to admit you are struggling. The Businessolver Foundation encourages you to utilize the above non-profit resources or other means to be your best self and/or take care of a friend or family member in need.
