Giving Back to Children’s Hospital Colorado
Volunteering is something I have always been passionate about and I enjoy finding charities that motivate me to give my time and get involved. I moved to Denver in June and was looking for a great organization where I could volunteer as often as I wanted. Businessolver’s Q4 Charity of choice in Denver was Children’s Hospital Colorado, one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation. Through all of the activities that the Denver office did with Children’s, it was easy to become committed to donating more of my time. We were lucky to have Christy Dobson and Kathleen McBride from Children’s Colorado visit the office on Wednesday for a Lunch and Learn.
Christy is the director of Corporate and Community Relations and spoke to us about how local businesses can get involved with Children’s. The hospital holds free corporate parenting workshops at various companies throughout the state. These workshops cover a wide range of pediatric topics such as healthy cooking and mental health. The Corporate Volunteer Program also gives employees, like us Solvers, the chance to work and volunteer together. The Denver Solvers volunteered at Boo at the Zoo and helped hand out toothbrushes and night lights to trick-or-treaters at The Denver Zoo. A few Solvers also volunteered at South Pole, a donation based event where families made holiday crafts and took pictures with Santa. We also hosted a blanket making party and were able to donate 24 fleece blankets. These are just a few of the opportunities that Children’s Colorado provides to community businesses and their employees.
Christy was joined by Kathleen McBride, the director of Association of Volunteers at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Children’s Colorado has thousands of volunteers that come in all shapes in sizes – they even have four-legged volunteers! Volunteers spend time with patients, bring dogs to provide animal-assisted therapy, greet new patient families, fundraise, staff the Gift Shop and much more.
The Denver office was lucky to be able to take part in many volunteer activities this quarter. A group of Solvers went to Children’s and hosted a craft party in the Atrium of the hospital – we made paper airplanes and wreaths with children who stopped by. We also donated blood, a great way to volunteer that does not cost money and requires little time while still making a big difference. Finally, we held a penny wars competition and were able to raise and donate $1,383.38 to Children’s Hospital Colorado.
I am thankful to work at Businessolver, a company who continuously builds a culture of giving and is as passionate about establishing employee giving experiences as much as I am. I’m also thankful for our Q4 Charity of Choice and that I found an amazing organization in my new home where I can continue my passion of helping others.
